Burry Port & Gwendraeth Valley Railway Centenary Celebrations,

Saturday 14th November

The celebrations are being held at Pontyates Station and Welfare Hall on Saturday 14th November 2009, commencing at 2.30 pm. On the day the Crwbin Brass Band and the choir "Cor Glannau'r Gwendraeth" will entertain. Work resulting from the collaboration between the School and the National Library of Wales Aberystwyth, including an animated film based on the railway will be on show.   Four schools in total are scheduled to be present. Also to be shown will be the film of the last coal train on the line in 1996.

Dress of the Edwardian period will be worn where possible. A ceremonial Tea (as per those which accompanied the old style ceremonial railway openings in the past) will be served and the day will conclude with a Twmpath.

This celebration day will be made possible by the cooperation between the Pontyates History Group, the Gwendraeth Railway Society and Carmarthenshire County Council.

Vic Mitchell & Keith Smith of Middleton Press have produced a volume entitled "Swansea to Carmarthen". This includes the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway and the Burry Port & Gwendraeth Valley Railways, as well as the main line.   The book is published to mark the centenary of the first passenger trains on the BP&GVR on 2nd August 1909. Mr Mitchell will attend the centenary celebrations to launch the book. Also present on the day, will be Mrs Jane Kennedy of Oakwood Press and  Mr Nigel Bird of Nigel Bird Books. No doubt they will have publications to display and sell on the day.
